Théophile Berengier "the Port Of Saint Chamas" 1895 Oil On Cardboard 24x36
Artist: Théophile Berengier ( 1851 - 1928)
Théophile BERENGIER (1851-1928)
Oil on cardboard 24x36 cm "The Port of Saint Chamas" 1895
Signed and dated lower right, titled on the reverse.
Born in Marseille, where he became friends with Adolphe Monticelli, Théophile Bérengier moved to Paris where he exhibited at the Salon d'Art Graphique in 1896.
After working in the Île-de-France region, he returned to his native city where he settled permanently in 1900.
He notably painted the ceiling of the Café de l'Univers in Marseille, now destroyed.
His landscapes, in which he maintained a taste for precision, are rendered with a vigorous touch, and as the critic Valat expressed it, "a dazzling display of free colors that intertwine without blending, that mute without ceasing to vibrate."
This charming painting depicts, in a very lively and modern style for the time, the small port of St Chamas, near From Marseille. Bibliography: Benezit, Dict Alauzen, Schurr...
Golded wooden frame
