Luc Albert MOREAU (1882-1948)
Oil on canvas 50x65 cm "The Almonds" 1927
Signed lower right, titled and dated and re-signed on the back
Luc Albert Moreau is one of the main representatives of Neorealism between the two wars and his works can be found in many Museums.
He belonged to the "Young French Painting" movement, like his friends Segonzac, La Patellière, Dufresne, and La Fresnaye, advocating a return to classicism and fine craftsmanship after the excesses of the avant-garde.
He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1908 onwards, then at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon National des Beaux-Arts, and internationally in Berlin, Munich, Moscow, Amsterdam, and New York.
Also a skilled engraver, he created book illustrations and numerous etchings and lithographs depicting sporting scenes, especially boxing, a sport he was passionate about.
In painting, he tackled various subjects—landscapes and genre scenes—with great mastery; still lifes were less frequent.
In our painting "The Almonds," we find his sculptural sense of volume, his high quality of construction, and his powerful and dynamic line. The painting quality is exceptional, with a very rich and nuanced texture and a harmonious range of muted colors, avoiding any facile aesthetic effect.
Bibliography: Benezit, Dictionnaire Edouard Joseph, Schurr,...
