Georges Lucien GUYOT (1885-1973)
Oil on canvas 81x60 cm "Street in "Breteuil"" circa 1930
Signed lower right
Georges Guyot entered early as an apprentice with a wood sculptor and spent his leisure time at the Jardin des Plantes drawing animals, while working on anatomy at the Museum of Natural History.
This training led him to become one of the great animal sculptors of the 20th century, with an international reputation.
He began exhibiting at the Salon des Arts Français in 1906. The war interrupted his career, but he continued to paint and draw, and in 1918 he moved to the Bateau-Lavoir in Paris, resuming sculpture in a studio he occupied until the fire of 1970.
As a painter, he did not limit himself to animals alone, also depicting landscapes of the Rouen region and the Île-de-France, as seen in our painting.
He applied his oils with a generous impasto, simplifying volumes with a Cubist influence and using bold colors.
Bibliography: Benezit, Dictionnaire Edouard Joseph, Schurr, etc.
Unframed
