Erich Schmid "deserted Street" Oil On Canvas 46x38
Artist: Erich Schmid ( 1908 - 1984 )
Erich Schmid (1908-1984)
Oil on canvas 46x38 cm "Deserted Street" Circa 1960
Signed lower right, resigned on the back.
Austrian, Erich Schmid studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts from 1930 to 1934. He left Austria in 1939 for Belgium and then settled in Paris.
He participated in one of the very first Salons des Réalités Nouvelles, before having numerous solo exhibitions in the United States, France, Belgium, etc.
Initially drawn to abstraction, Erich Schmid eventually moved towards a figurative approach to nature, tinged with Expressionism, similar to the style of the Lyon "Sanzists." This group of Lyon painters adopted his work: Truphémus, Fusaro, Philibert-Charrin, Cottavoz, etc.
Erich Scmid's pictorial universe crystallizes : blurred and indistinct cities, deserted streets and squares where human solitude reigns, compact processions of figures huddled together in a poignant sense of insecurity. Only a few loyal admirers allow the artist to survive.
Erich Schmid does nothing to establish himself, a victim of a mental block in the face of the demands of the struggle for life. Unknown to the general public, he nevertheless enjoys the recognition of his peers who consider him one of their own.
"Schmid is the most moving painter I know. I have never remained indifferent to the subject he portrays. Each canvas is an emotion difficult to contain: the tears of the gut." Jean Fusaro
Bibliography: Benezit, Schurr ...
Unframed
