Born in Nantes in 1901, son of the Symbolist painter Edgar Maxence, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1920, winning a silver medal, then a gold medal in 1925.
He received a travel grant to Madagascar and was appointed an official painter of the French Navy in 1938.
He illustrated books and is best known as a figure and portrait painter.
This study of a woman in her home is characteristic of his spontaneous and charming style.
