A student of Cormon, Gaston Balande exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1905 and 1931, at the Salon d'Automne from 1913, at the Salon des Indépendants from 1921, and at the Salon des Tuileries from 1933 to 1936.
An excellent landscape painter, he traveled throughout Europe and Africa, but it was primarily in Brittany and his native Charente that he worked most regularly.
The evolution of his work can be traced by consulting his Catalogue Raisonné: from early works with muted yet sensitive harmonies, like this painting, to mature works with simplified drawing and more vibrant colors.
His works are in numerous museums, notably the one in La Rochelle, where he served as curator.
