Born in Ukraine, Issachar Ryback was a student at the Kiev Academy of Fine Arts, often exploring themes related to the history of the Jewish people.
In 1926, he settled in Paris and exhibited successfully at the Salon des Tuileries.
The renowned art dealer George Wildenstein was preparing a retrospective exhibition of his work, but Ryback died suddenly on the eve of the opening.
His work reflects the Expressionist style of the Slavic painters of the School of Paris, as seen in this highly expressive portrait.
