Born in 1935 in Spain, Jean-Pierre Chaput, whose real name was Luis Rivas Arroyo, arrived in France as an infant, and his surname is likely that of his adoptive family.
A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Clermont-Ferrand, he lived in Vichy in the 1960s, then settled in Japan for an extended period before returning to Paris to pursue his career.
He painted many circus scenes in his youth, and later, under the influence of his time in Japan, his work took on a particular sensitivity to the human condition.
He painted numerous highly expressive portraits, such as this portrait of a child, rendered in a very free and vibrant style.
In Vichy, the Académie du Vernet dedicated a retrospective to him in September 2024.
