Signed, dated, and located upper left.
Born in Warsaw, Ladislas Kijno arrived in France in 1925 and studied philosophy in Lille from 1941 to 1945 while beginning to paint.
He frequented Louis Aragon, Francis Ponge, and the Parisian intellectual circles, which led him to create many works in collaboration with poets.
He worked in Germaine Richier's studio and participated in the decoration of the Church of Assy in 1949, along with many important post-war painters.
His first solo exhibition was held in Paris in 1954, followed by many others, notably a major exhibition at the Antibes Museum in 1957.
"Women in Lisboa" dates from this period, when he had already begun to Experimenting with crumpled paper, rejecting the distinction between figuration and abstraction.
The line is vigorous, the blacks magnified by touches of vibrant color, expressing the strong personalities of the figures.
An internationally renowned artist, famous for his crumpled paper works, Kijno is an inventor of forms, both in his gestural period and in his explorations of materials.
