17th Century Map, Duchy Of Savoy Sabaudia Ducatus By Johannes Janssonius Amsterdam

Artist: Johannes Janssonius

Antique geographical map of the Duchy of Savoy by Johannes Janssonius, hand-colored 17th-century engraving, Sabaudia Ducatus, Jan Jansson, Amsterdam, 17th century, engraving

Printed on laid paper. The platemark is deeply impressed and perfectly legible around the entire border. The print was subsequently enhanced with manual watercolor hand-coloring to outline the territories and geographical features.

Detailed topography depicting the mountainous relief through a "molehill" style system, forests, as well as the hydrographic network distinctly including Lake Geneva (Lacus Lemanus), Lake Bourget, and Lake Annecy. Cities and towns are represented by miniature buildings.

Ornamentation includes a large title cartouche in the eastern part of the composition, titled "Sabaudia Ducatus Savoye". The text is framed by a strapwork decoration, flanked by two cherubs (putti) supporting the heraldic coat of arms of the House of Savoy. Two distance scales are present in the upper right. The publishing imprint "Amsterdami. Apud Joan: Janssonium." is engraved at the bottom center.

Excellent state of preservation. Generous white margins are preserved beyond the platemark. The expected central vertical fold, inherent to its original atlas binding, is present. Sound paper with fresh colors. Contemporary mounting under a bevel-cut mat, protective glass, and a varnished natural wood frame.

Measurements:
• Platemark dimensions: 46 x 37.5 cm
