Drawing, Red Chalk Pierre Berjole (1897-1990) Female Nude 1942, Paris France
Artist: Pierre Berjole (1897-1990)
Antique artwork, sanguine drawing by Pierre Berjole (1897–1990), female nude dated 1942, School of Paris, Montparnasse Group, Orientalism.
Original drawing executed in red chalk on paper. The work is signed “Berjole” in cursive in the lower right section. The handwritten title “nu de dos” (“nude from behind”) and the date “1942” are inscribed in pencil beneath the framing line. The work is confidently attributed to the French artist Pierre Berjole (1897–1990).
Figurative representation of a full-length female nude seen from behind. The model’s musculature is subtly shaped through plays of light and shadow. The female figure is shown drawing aside a curtain with large geometric patterns, revealing a background suggesting an interior or alcove, with a picture hanging on the wall. An open book is placed in the foreground on the right, on a floor decorated with carpet-like motifs. The close framing enhances the intimate character of the scene.
The artist demonstrates strong technical mastery of the red chalk medium, allowing for subtle gradations and blending on the skin tones. The line is lively, textured, and assured, structuring both the heavy drapery of the curtain and the anatomy of the model. The composition is bordered by a fine graphite margin line.
Excellent overall state of preservation of the paper support. No visible tears, creases, or foxing stains to the naked eye.
Later modern framing under glass. Profiled wooden frame with burl walnut-style veneer, enhanced by an inner beaded frieze. Mounting includes an integrated neutral mat. The back is closed with a rigid protective cardboard panel held by flat metal staples and fitted with an upper hanging attachment.
Measurements:
• 41.5 cm — visible width of the artwork
• 55.5 cm — visible height of the artwork
• 57 cm — total width including frame
• 71 cm — total height including frame
