Achille Fouquier III : "the Fort On The Island"

Achille Fouquier (1817-1895?) III: “In the shade of the tall pines” pen drawing and sepia wash on light pencil line 13.5 X 20.7 cm. Traces of gluing in the corners. Lit by a break in the clouds, three-masts and boats with auric sails sail in front of a fortified island in the Mediterranean. A tireless traveller, Achille Fouquier brought back from his many travels sketches, anecdotes, observations collected in several books that were published. Whether from the Basque Country (he was mayor of Saint-Jean-de-Luz), Italy, Greece, the Balkans or the Middle East, his drawings taken from life bear witness to the history of these regions.
