Kilim Reyhanlı. Anatolia. Circa 1880. 190 X 150 Cm
This Anatolian kilim is here with us, it could have belonged to a Museum, a private collector or appeared in a specialized book. Reyhanlı in style, the piece features a rich decorative vocabulary, typical of southern Turkey, blending tribal symbols, spiritual protection and expressions of everyday life.
The weaving is a pure marvel, fine to the extreme. It's simple: with wool, you couldn't do it any tighter. That's why kilim is so supple and surprisingly light.
It's sensational. As are the exclusively plant-based shades, which have a magnificent natural purity.
Our restorer Saïd has applied a stop stitch to each fringe. The 2 lengthwise edgings have been fully restored. The piece is thus protected on all sides.
Considering its age, we decided not to touch the surface apart from the fragile areas that have been masterfully restored with respect for tradition.
From the point of view of narrative vocabulary, the piece is a tribute to the culture of the nomadic Reyhanlı populations once living in southern Turkey.
It features a constellation of 8-pointed stars evoking protection against the evil eye. Series of crochet motifs contrast with an immaculate white cotton background.
The borders are marvelous, featuring intricate patterns composed mainly of wolf's mouths that symbolize protection.
These borders symbolically "frame" and protect the central field.
It's a delight.
Circa 1880 or earlier
