Samurai "Mempo" half-mask in reddish steel.
Pronounced chin, mobile nose, pierced nostrils, exposed copper upper and lower teeth, wide yadome on the cheeks and peg attachment under the chin for the kabuto cord.
Red lacquered interior (the color red was meant to inspire courage and hide blood).
Despite missing parts this mask still exudes an astonishing impression of power.
This mempo was part of the collection of William A. Galeno, M.D., one of the largest private collections of Japanese armor in the West and was reproduced in the "Ian Botommley - Japanese Armor, The Galeno Collection - 1998", on page 166.
