19th Century English Windsor Low Back Armchair In Solid Elm With Steam-bent Ash Back

Windsor armchair known as the “Low Back” model, with armrests and a low curved back, English work from the 19th century.

The seat is hewn from a single piece of solid elm, sculpted and hollowed by use, and shaped according to the anatomical form characteristic of these exceptional rustic seats. The raw surface retains its original dry, golden patina, bearing witness to authentic wear and continuous use over nearly two centuries.

The semicircular back is composed of a bowed rail in steam-bent ash, rising in a broad arch designed to cradle the back. Turned spindle supports and miniature baluster turnings are joined by a pierced back splat with scroll motifs inspired by simplified Chippendale models. It is flanked by two armrests descending in a gentle curve.

The base stands on four slightly splayed, turned baluster legs with multiple ring moldings. H-stretchers forming a crinoline beneath the seat ensure the rigidity of the whole, in accordance with the traditional techniques of the joiners of the Thames Valley and the Buckinghamshire workshops.

Condition: Remarkable unrestored patina. Good overall state of preservation. Wear consistent with age and use. No restoration required.

A chair of fine quality, with generous grain and robust construction. A testament to English provincial craftsmanship and to the taste for refined vernacular furniture. Although functional, this armchair also displays a distinct architectural elegance, emphasized by the restraint of its design and the quality of its turning.
