François Maury 1861-1933 - Impressionist Landscape - Lively Farmhouse In The South Of France

An interesting Impressionist painting dated 1886 depicting a pleasant, lively landscape of southern France with a peasant woman in front of a Provençal farmhouse... The painting is signed by the artist François Maury (1861-1933), to whom the Bénézit dictionary devotes a substantial chapter and whose interesting biography can be found on Wikipedia: François Maury first studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, and continued his training at the Académie Julian in Paris, before exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon d'Automne... The museums of Marseille (Beaux-Arts and Cantini) as well as the Toulon museum hold nearly thirty of his works. Note: one of the attractions of the work offered here is its relative rarity within this artist's oeuvre: indeed, François Maury's style is often compared to that of Monticelli, but also to Diaz de la Penà for his paintings in The atmosphere of the Barbizon school... However, the painting offered here defies this classification, as it is more reminiscent of the style of Provençal landscape painters like Émile Loubon or Paul Guigou, who ultimately offered a more intimate vision of the Provençal countryside... Christie's London auction house sold a work quite similar to this one in terms of color scheme in 1997 (see last photo)... Values & Auction Prices: The value of works by this painter varies according to their quality and subject matter: its record of €13,000 was achieved in 1999 for a large canvas entitled "La Grande Odalisque," and among its sales results, there are more than seventy auction results between €500 and €5,200 (Source: Artprice).
