Large & handsome 1st Empire portrait circa 1804-1815 depicting a young upper-class bourgeois, during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte:his neat attire and mounted collar correspond to a style that was in vogue from the end of the French Revolution and designated elegantly dressed men as muscadins, merveilleux and other incredibles ... note: this canvas is unsigned, but its fine quality suggests the presenceof an excellent artist, especially as the bourgeoisie of the time often commissionedthe best portraitists: one is tempted to think of the manner of a painter like Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761-1845) but as this canvas was acquired in the Montpellier region, there is also the style of the painter François-Xavier Fabre who could make an excellent "suspect": comparison with these two artistswith these two artists is at least a measure of the author's quality / research enthusiasts beware!
