Large Canvas 1835...vast Scene Of A Hunting With Dogs & Deer "the Waterboat"

Artist: Pierre Marie Joseph Vernet dit Lauzet (1797-1875) ?
Large & remarkable 19th century painting, dated 1835, which represents a scene of stag hunting with a pack of dogs that have surrounded a large stag taking refuge in a pool: in the jargon of hunting, this particular moment is called "the Water-Battery". This painting is unsigned but bears the stamp of the art dealer "Moyon - rue de l'Université - Paris"... Consulting the Gallica database of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, one can find the collection of this dealer, the complete sale of which took place in 1837: several paintings by "M. Vernet-Lozet" are mentioned, notably lot No. 698, described as follows: Stag chased by hounds, and just as it is about to be caught, it leaps into a pond at the edge of a wood / see last photograph... Unless I am mistaken, this is the painting offered here... The Wikipedia website mentions an artist named Pierre Marie Joseph Vernet, known as Lauzet (1797-1875), who was a student of the painter Etna Michallon (1796-1822). From 1842 onwards, he worked exclusively in Russia, in Saint Petersburg, where he spent the rest of his life. This explains the areas of uncertainty surrounding his provenance, especially since he is not listed in the Bénézit dictionary, although he exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1831 and is listed on most auction websites... Note: attribution aside, it is a powerful and naturalistic work that gives pride of place to the forces of nature and animal instinct, much like Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) would do a few years later. - Note a few minor losses and two small nicks (a simple detail) that need fixing. - Canvas size: 61 cm x 50 cm. Frame: 83 cm x 72 cm. - Ask me for more photos if needed.
