Large Painting Circa 1960 - The Couple On A Motorcycle - An Artist From The Ukrainian School Of Fine Arts
Artist: D’après Une école Russe
A large and interesting painting, presumably dating from the 1960s, depicting a couple sitting near a motorcycle. The work is unsigned but has a label on the back that reads "Samokhin Vladimir Kalistratovich, born February 27, 1938." He was a Ukrainian artist who lived during the Soviet era and graduated from the Moscow School of Fine Arts in 1957, then from the kyiv State Institute of Fine Arts in 1965. From 1966, Samokhin taught at the T. Shevchenko State School of Fine Arts, where he trained many young Ukrainian artists. Note: a web search reveals this theme in the work of another Russian painter, and it is likely that the work presented here was created as part of a Fine Arts assignment. Indeed, during art training, it's common for a painter who wants to perfect their technique to create this kind of replica. I mention this because I'll be showing several high-quality paintings designated as "Samokhin Workshop," and comparable themes can be found in the works of Russian artists from the first half of the 20th century. Aside from the question of attribution, the charm of this painting lies in the atmosphere of freedom it reflects, which paradoxically evokes American culture of the 1950s and 60s, with cult films like Rebel Without a Cause or Easy Rider. Panel size (Masonite): 53 cm x 42 cm. Frame: 67 cm x 52 cm. Ask me for more photos if needed.
