The work is substantial for a watercolor, a format seemingly intended for a salon or exhibition; the high-quality frame also reflects this. The subject depicts an excellent forest landscape in the Barbizon tradition, dating from around 1895-1905. A winding path through autumnal undergrowth in the heart of a birch and oak forest, the gently rolling terrain is bordered by sandstone blocks with rounded, smooth volumes, and the perspective is drawn towards the light. The palette of this work is dominated by warm golden brown ochres, autumnal oranges, and stony grays. These colors give the whole a very poetic, late-season atmosphere. The artist uses a relatively dense watercolor, sometimes close to gouache, which allows for the modeling of forms. The light appears diffuse, like a veiled autumn sky, concentrating on the central path, the red foliage, and certain rocky surfaces.
Probable location in the Fontainebleau forest: a path ascending between rocks in a light undergrowth; this is most likely a landscape situated in the Apremont Forest or perhaps at a place called La Gorge aux Loups – Marlotte.
This is a site frequently painted by artists between 1870 and 1910.
On the back is a label from P. Ferret, packer of works of art working for the Fine Arts administration, i.e., the official Salon, national exhibitions, and the transport of works to museums. It reads: “Jeannot .2”. This type of inscription generally corresponds to: a work number in the submission to the Salon, or a shipping crate number.
Joseph-Clément-Maxime Jeannot was born on January 5, 1855, in Ornans, a region deeply rooted in the landscape tradition of Franche-Comté. Ornans is particularly famous as the birthplace of the realist painter Gustave Courbet, whose artistic influence extended far and wide to artists in the region during the 19th century. According to the archives of the National Institute of Art History, Jeannot was admitted in 1873 to the architectural studio of Émile Vaudremer, where he earned several academic distinctions in perspective and descriptive geometry before turning to landscape painting. This academic training explains the solid spatial construction and perspective precision evident in his compositions. In the 1890s, Jeannot worked between Paris and the Fontainebleau region, notably in Marlotte, an artists' village near the forest. He participated in various watercolor exhibitions in Paris between 1894 and 1899, notably in artistic circles such as the Vaudremer-Raulin studio and the L'Arc-en-Ciel artistic group.
His public career was solidified when he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1905, where he received an honorable mention, an official distinction from the jury recognizing the quality of his work. Jeannot was then a member of the Société des Artistes Français and living in Paris on Rue Guénégaud.
