On the back the stamp of the canvas's supplier: Hardy-Alan installed rue du Cherche-Midi in Paris, a store frequented by many renowned artists including Vincent van Gogh, Auguste Renoir, Henri Fantin-Latour and James McNeill Whistler.
Louis-Pierre Spindler (1800-1889) was a French painter, born in Huningue, Alsace . Son of François Xavier Spindler ( 1759-1835), Architect, controller of the Œuvre de l'Oeuvre de la Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg. Louis-Pierre was the uncle of artist and marquetteur Charles Spindler. Louis-Pierre Spindler trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris in the studio of Anne-Louis Girodet (Prix de Rome 1787). He exhibited at the Salon of 1825 and produced illustrations for the novel "Le Comte de Valmont". At the 1826 Salon, the Emperor of Russia acquires the two works he presents: La jolie fille de Perth and Ivanhoe, he wins a second gold medal at the 1833 and 1835 Salons. He painted in a style close to that of Greuze, of whom he was a great admirer. He was introduced to the circle of English aristocracy living in Paris, who persuaded him to move to London, where he launched a successful career, before settling in Manchester, where he painted fine portraits of local industrial families. Having made his fortune, he left England in 1850 and settled in Fontainebleau, where he remained until his death, maintaining strong links with Alsace.
