Reverie, Young Girl At The Fountain And Two Doves. Signed C. Pabst
Artist: Pabst Camille-alfred
Reverie, Young girl with a fountain and two doves. Camille Alfred Pabst (1828-1898)
The scene takes place in spring in an orchard, cherry trees and plants are in bloom, a young Alsatian woman in sober traditional dress, in a white which dominates in the middle of the colors of nature, her headdress is a strong and characteristic regional symbol, she is leaning on the wall of a fountain whose water spurts through a grotesque muzzle, on the edges of the basin two doves are pecking each other. This remarkable work, signed by the artist Camille Alfred Pabst, transports us into a meditative and serene atmosphere, a temporal pause mixing beauty of art and simplicity of life. The fresh water flowing from the fountain symbolizes renewal, spring, as Goethe sang, freshness takes here both its concrete meaning and its abstract value of youth. It encourages this reflection on the passing of time, the two doves materialize in this temporality the young girl's amorous objective. The large copper watering can placed at her feet evokes the transfer of life towards this renewal and the indispensable contribution of this vital water to the flowers, and well beyond, which make up the environment of this delicate and poetic work, which invites contemplation.

The artist Camille Alfred Pabst (1828-1898) was born in Heiteren, Haut-Rhin. After a career as a lawyer, he devoted himself to painting. He participated in numerous exhibitions at the Paris Salon and exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Philadelphia with a painting entitled "A Bride in Alsace." Often described as a painter of Alsatian folklore, his work also includes portraits, like those of Charles Dolfus, and historical scenes. Sources from the book "Alsatian Painters" by François Lotz. The most widely represented painting is found at the Strasbourg Museum of Fine Arts, where we see a young Alsatian woman in a kitchen decorated with copper, kneading dough on a table with sloping legs, a typical example of regional Alsatian furniture. Works by Pabst are included in the collections of the Strasbourg Museum of Fine Arts, the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, and the Mulhouse Museum of Fine Arts.
