"Lucien Binaepfel's Wrestlers "
Oil on canvas by Lucien Binaepfel depicting naked wrestlers in a forest. The brushstrokes are thick and vibrant, reinforcing the impression of movement created by the two subjects. The back of the canvas is also painted with a bouquet of sunflowers. Signature bottom left. Dimensions: 73 x 54 cm. Dimensions with frame: 83.5 x 65 cm. Lucien Binaepfel was born in 1893 in Rixheim and died in 1972 in Scharrachbergheim. He first trained in industrial design at the Mulhouse School of Design between 1909 and 1911. He continued his training at the Royal Academy of Stuttgart, before becoming a student of Max Dömer and Frantz von Stuck at the Munich Academy of Art. His stays in Germany would orient his style towards Expressionism. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne in Paris, as well as in Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Switzerland, and even at his home in Scharrachbergheim. He was also director of the Mulhouse School of Art from 1941 to 1942. Today, his works can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-arts in Mulhouse and the Musée Historique de Haguenau.
