Portrait of a young woman against a beautiful gold background; a discreet halo idealizes this young Italian woman as Magdalene. Oil on canvas, signed Many Benner (1873-1965). Many Benner was a student of Jean-Jacques Henner, Benjamin Constant, and Jules Lefebvre at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He won the Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1894 and 1898. Born in Capri, Many Benner represents the fourth generation of a line of artists of Alsatian origin. His father, Jean Benner, and his uncle, Emmanuel Benner, were renowned artists born in Mulhouse. He received numerous medals at the Salons (1892, 1902, and 1905). His works encompass landscapes, portraits, and nudes. He also served as curator of the Musée National Jean-Jacques Henner. He was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1925.
