A young woman in Orientalist costume holding a large ceremonial fan/plume known as a flabellum in front of a large curtain, beside a wrought-iron stele trimmed with flowers.
Oil on panel dated 1882 monogrammed EC lower right + signature and text partially visible .

Eduard Charlemont, Austrian painter born in Vienna in 1848, his father and brother were also painters . He exhibited from the age of 15 at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, from which he graduated. After completing his training, he traveled to many countries before settling in Paris, where he lived for almost thirty years. He won several awards at the Salon de Paris organized by the Academie des Beaux Arts, as well as a medal at the Paris International Exhibition in 1900. With works in numerous museums, his best-known work "The Moorish Chief", for which he won a medal at the 1878 Salon, is on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Charlemont died in Vienna in 1906.
