Medieval Bronze Pax– Late 15th Century – Formerly In The Collection Of Dr. Jean Moreaux
Medieval Bronze Pax – Late 15th Century – Formerly in the Collection of Dr. Jean Moreaux.
An elegant openwork bronze Pax dating from the late 15th century.
This finely crafted piece depicts Christ on the cross flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John, all within a delicate Gothic arch surmounted by a finial. The composition is supported by two richly decorated pillars, reflecting the refinement of late medieval religious metalwork.
On the reverse, the object retains its original handle, attesting to its authenticity and liturgical use.
It is in excellent condition, with a beautiful, dark, antique patina. Note: the head of Christ and that of the Vanitas figure at the foot of the cross show some minor wear, which does not detract from the legibility or the overall charm.
This remarkable object comes from the former collection of Dr. Jean Moreaux (1926-2012).
Function: The kiss of peace, or osculatorium, was used during Mass in the Middle Ages. It replaced the liturgical kiss exchanged between the faithful: they took turns kissing this sacred object, usually presented by the celebrant or an assistant. This ritual symbolically transmitted the peace of Christ to the congregation, while respecting social and hierarchical conventions.
Dimensions: 6.1 x 10.1 cm.
Price excluding shipping.
Police Register Ref: A007.
