Medieval English Glazed Ceramic Pitcher – London, 13th–14th Century – Provenance: Bruges
Made from an orange-colored clay, this fine example features a green glaze concentrated on the neck and the inner rim of the lip, a characteristic of certain English utilitarian wares from this period. It features a side handle and retains a beautiful, uniform patina.
Based on its typology, this pitcher most likely originated from a London workshop. Exemplars of identical shape have in fact been unearthed during archaeological excavations in the Thames, attesting to this type of production in medieval England.
The specimen offered here comes from a former Belgian collection and was discovered in Bruges. It serves as a particularly evocative testament to the commercial exchanges between England and Flanders in the Middle Ages, as Bruges was then one of the major centers of European trade.
The pitcher measures 26 cm in height. It is in good condition, with only a few small chips on the rim, consistent with its age.
An authentic piece, rare on the market, that will appeal to collectors of medieval ceramics as well as enthusiasts of archaeology and the history of medieval trade.
