Antique Prayer Rug. Konya, Anatolia. Circa 1880. 125 X 74 Cm
A magnificent carpet with a mihrab bordered on the inside with small carnations (a desire for happiness) and decorated in its center with two tarantulas, as if for protection (a talisman). Above the mihrab are two stylized cruciform roses (love). The inner border represents the Garden of Eden (Paradise), and the large outer border is not a succession of snakes (protective talismans), but rather dragons guarding roses of love… The woman who weaves the carpet desires only happiness and passion with her husband, and that he be protected from deadly animals and from misfortune or malevolence (see the four small protective eyes at the top of the field). Woven and knotted wool on wool. Dyed exclusively with plant-based materials. The piece is in very good condition. A true work of art, perfect for wall hanging or floor placement, for example in a bedroom. Circa 1880 or earlier. Dimensions: 125 x 74 cm. Laurent Beauty of Kilims
