Object description :

"Persian Sarough Rug. Circa 1960. 340x240 Cm "
In the heart of the mountains of central Iran, north of Arak (formerly Sultanabad), lies the village of Sarough, renowned for generations for its exceptional weaving expertise.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this region became one of the most dynamic centers for Persian carpet production. High-quality carpets were primarily made for export, a significant portion of which went to the United States when the European market declined after World War I. Their durability, the finesse of their workmanship, and the elegance of their designs explain their popularity in the West.

Sarough carpets are characterized by their Persian knotting, their dense and resilient wool, and their thick pile, which give them remarkable strength. With proper care, these carpets retain their luster and appearance for decades, even in high-traffic living spaces.

A particular style of production, now known as American Sarough rugs, was developed specifically to meet the tastes of the North American market. The traditional, lighter, rust-toned hues did not correspond to local demand, so the rugs were often re-dyed upon arrival to achieve deeper, darker colors.
This practice gave rise to the nickname "Painted Sarough."

Sarough rugs come in a wide variety of designs, ranging from rugs with a central medallion to pastoral or entirely floral motifs. The most common palettes combine cream, indigo, and red tones, emblematic of the elegance of this traditional style.
