"Rug/bag. Persia. Late 19th Century. 97 X 75 Cm"
Superb and large 19th-century satchel originating from Persia. The object is remarkable in every respect. First, one must feel the quality of the hand-spun wool and the fineness of the weave. On the front, of course, it is adorned with small embroidered motifs: stars and an eye to ward off the evil eye. The back is equally impressive, for it is here that one truly appreciates the weaver's dexterity, her infinite precision, and the meticulous regularity of the weave! Also on the back, one is literally captivated by the colors, which possess an aquatic purity. These are vegetal hues, of course, in perfect harmony, a succession of juxtaposed horizontal bands contrasting with ecru, almost white, sections—a delightful contrast. Woven wool on wool. Mixed technique. Circa 1880. Condition close to miraculous. Dimensions: 97 x 75 cm. Laurent Beauty of Kilims
