Henri Clamens 1905-1937 - Large Gouache Painting - The Provençal Livestock Market
Artist: Henri Clamens (1905-1937)
A large and luminous painting from around 1920-1930, combining gouache and watercolor, depicting a vast cattle market scene set around a Provençal fountain. The location is not specified, but the clothing of the figures suggests a southern French setting. The work is signed in the lower right corner by Henri Clamens (1905-1937), an excellent artist to whom the Bénézit dictionary and Wikipedia dedicate chapters. Born in Nîmes, he first trained at the Marseille School of Fine Arts, then at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he won the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1925. Also a laureate of the Villa Abd-el-Tif competition, he left for Algeria in 1931. In poor health, he died prematurely at the age of 37. The Nîmes Museum will hold a retrospective exhibition of his work between [dates missing]. 2009 & 2010, which will see the publication of a book entitled "Henri Clamens, 1905-1937, from the Prix de Rome to Orientalism"... Note: one of the attractions of the work offered here is the rarity of the theme, since the artist is primarily known for his "Orientalist" works, which gives this gouache an added degree of originality...
