Model 1849 Naval Pistol
The Model 1849 naval pistol is a particularly interesting weapon, technically advanced and emblematic of the transition between percussion firearms and more modern systems. It is an evolution of the 1837/42 system.
The rear plate is engraved "Mre Nle de Chatellerault" and stamped with an "L," which could be the mark of the Lahaye inspector at the factory from 1844 to 1854.
The smoothbore barrel is 15.2 mm caliber, octagonal at the breech, then round, dated 1850 on the right flat and stamped "MN" for Manufacrure Nationale (National Factory) with the mark of Arcelin, Director of the Factory. The left flat is stamped with "A" and "C" in a cartouche and a starred "F." The breech tang is engraved "Mle 1849." It has fixed rear and front sights. The barrel is mounted with a claw. Chain ramrod.
Reinforced walnut stock with a grip strap bearing a production stamp in the center, marked "MN" for Manufacture Nationale and dated 1851.
All furniture pieces bear the same hallmarks. All screws are numbered. The butt cap features a naval anchor.
This weapon is very rare, which explains its price. Only 8,433 were produced between 1849 and 1853. It is the last percussion firearm of the French Navy. It is in excellent original condition.
