Louis XIV Period Inkwell In Breccia Marble – 17th Century.
Artist: Inconnu
Louis XIV Period Inkwell in Breccia Marble – 17th Century. This superb Louis XIV period inkwell is crafted from breccia marble with warm tones of golden yellow, orange, and veined purple, displaying a richly decorative natural pattern. Its architectural form, both restrained and powerful, is typical of the Grand Siècle: a molded base with projecting edges, clean lines, and perfectly balanced proportions. The marble used, most likely Aleppo breccia or Languedoc yellow breccia, exhibits a vibrant polychromy characteristic of the marbles used in the grand decoration of Versailles under Louis XIV. These tones are also found in the decorative elements and furnishings of the 17th century, where the natural richness of the stone contributed fully to the monarchical splendor. It features a double circular reservoir for inkwells, with peripheral holes for quills, as well as a rectangular compartment at the back for sand or writing accessories. The interior organization reflects thoughtful and functional use. Please note: there are a few small chips and old nicks on the edges, perfectly consistent with its age and contributing to its overall charm and authenticity. These marks of time enhance its historical character. A rare object, both decorative and emblematic of the Grand Siècle's art of living, ideal for a cabinet of curiosities, a discerning collector's desk, or a classic interior.
