Large Female Portrait In An Interior – Lyon Salon 1910

Artist: Leon Brunard (1872-1931)
Large Portrait of a Woman in an Interior – Lyon Salon 1910 Oil on canvas. An important and remarkable portrait of a woman by the Lyon painter Léon Brunard (1872–1931), depicting an elegant young woman seated in a refined interior, absorbed in reading a newspaper. The figure is portrayed with great psychological sensitivity: a pensive gaze, a natural pose, her head resting delicately on her hand. The young woman wears a flowing, light-colored dress with soft, luminous textures, enlivened by an elegant blue bow at the bodice. Beside her, a refined composition completes the scene: a richly colored bouquet of flowers, a copper teapot with warm reflections, and a cup placed on a table covered with a decorative fabric. These elements allow the artist to display his full talent in rendering textures: the gleam of the metal, the transparency of the petals, the softness of the fabrics, and the hushed atmosphere of the interior. This work is a beautiful example of the intimate and elegant painting style practiced by Léon Brunard, a Lyon-based artist active at the turn of the 20th century, renowned for his portraits and interior scenes imbued with finesse and delicacy. Particularly noteworthy is that this painting was exhibited at the Lyon Salon in 1910, where the artist was awarded the third prize (silver medal). We possess the original medal and the certificate attesting to this distinction, rare items that enhance the historical significance of the work. The painting is also accompanied by an exceptional collection of documents: an early photograph of the sitter, allowing for the identification of the person depicted; and a period photograph showing Léon Brunard in his studio, where this painting is clearly visible on his easel, a valuable record of the artist's work and the genesis of the piece. These documents lend the work a particularly interesting heritage dimension, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process and working environment of a Lyon painter at the beginning of the 20th century. The canvas is signed Brunard. Its significant size, pictorial quality, exhibition at the Lyon Salon, and the presence of period photographs make this piece particularly attractive to both collectors and enthusiasts of Lyon painting.
