View of the surroundings of Bayonne - Oil on panel
Beautiful oil on panel by painter Jules Flandrin depicting a landscape around Bayonne. The composition extends over a vast undulating countryside of alternating meadows, fields and groves, dominated on the horizon by the iconic silhouettes of the towers of Bayonne Cathedral.
A student of Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Jules Flandrin established himself as one of the great landscape painters of his generation. His work is appreciated for its sensitivity to light, its subtle palette and its ability to render the atmosphere of landscapes with great poetry.
This work bears on the reverse a label from the prestigious Galerie Druet in Paris, famous for exhibiting and supporting many major artists of the early 20th century.
The artist's supple, luminous touch delicately enlivens the landscape, offering a peaceful, harmonious vision of the Basque countryside. A quality painting, characteristic of Jules Flandrin's talent and his attachment to French landscapes.
