Émile Gallé – Hibiscus Vase – Art Nouveau

A very beautiful vase signed by Gallé, from the Art Nouveau period, made of multilayered glass with acid-etched cameo engraving.

With a slender, slightly pear-shaped form, it features a very elegant naturalistic design of hibiscus flowers, buds, and foliage spreading across the entire body.

The design offers remarkable chromatic harmony: the leaves and flowers, in shades of mauve, violet, and slightly bluish tones, stand out against a luminous pale yellow background with opalescent hues.

The acid-etching technique, applied to multiple layers of glass, lends depth and relief to the plant motifs, with denser foliage toward the base and large flowers blooming toward the neck.

This combination of yellow and purple is found on several of Gallé’s hibiscus vases; a comparable model is notably listed by Christie’s as “flowering hibiscus and foliage” on a yellow background lined with purple.
