A Carved And Openwork Wooden Side Table After Gabriel Viardot (1830–1906), Late 19th Century

Artist: Gabriel Viardot (1830-1906)
Carved and Openwork Wooden Cellar After Gabriel Viardot (1830–1906) Late 19th Century – Japonisme Inspired. This elegant cellar, crafted from finely carved and openwork natural wood, is inspired by Japonisme and made in the style of Gabriel Viardot (1830–1906), the renowned Parisian cabinetmaker known for his Orientalist furniture exhibited at the Universal Expositions. The slender and perfectly proportioned structure rests on four cabriole legs connected by delicately openwork stretchers with geometric designs inspired by the Far East. The whole is punctuated by several asymmetrical, tiered shelves, creating a refined architectural effect typical of Japonisme furniture from the second half of the 19th century. The openwork is particularly meticulous, with stylized motifs reminiscent of Asian screens and frames, achieving a subtle balance between lightness and structure. The top is crowned with an elegant, nuanced green onyx marble, its natural veining blending celadon, honey, and ochre tones, lending contrast and refinement to the warmth of the wood. A striking feature: the side panel displays a finely chiseled bronze dragon in relief, an emblematic detail that Gabriel Viardot particularly favored in his creations. This zoomorphic presence gives the piece character and singularity, while reinforcing its Far Eastern inspiration. The wood boasts a beautiful, warm, and even antique patina, highlighting the natural grain and the quality of craftsmanship. A decorative and refined piece of furniture, ideal as an end table, sculpture stand, plant stand, or art display, this small table will integrate seamlessly into a classic interior as well as an eclectic or contemporary setting. Period: late 19th century Style: Japonisme, after Gabriel Viardot Materials: carved and openwork wood, onyx marble, bronze Condition: very good state of preservation, antique patina An elegant and architectural piece, a testament to the taste for the Far East which profoundly marked French decorative arts under the Second Empire and the Third Republic.
