Constantin Font (1890–1954)
Bouquet of Flowers in a Blue Pitcher, 1943

Oil on Isorel panel, signed and dated 1943.

A beautiful and luminous floral composition by the painter Constantin Jean Lucien Antonin Font, born in Auch in 1890 and died in Paris in 1954. A student of Fernand Cormon, Constantin Font was one of the leading figures in French painting during the first half of the 20th century. An honorary member of the Société des Artistes Français, he was awarded a silver medal in 1921—the year he won the Prix de Rome—and then a gold medal in 1922. He also won the Grand Prix d’Athènes, served as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Toulouse, and was awarded the Grand Prix at the 1937 International Exposition.

Known for his Orientalist scenes, landscapes, nudes, and still lifes, Constantin Font demonstrates here his mastery of color in a lavish bouquet spilling from an elegant blue-gray pitcher. His brushwork is free, lively, and spontaneous, brought to life by a subtle palette blending soft pinks, luminous whites, deep reds, vibrant oranges, and delicate greens.

Dated 1943, this work possesses remarkable freshness and an immediate decorative presence. Here, the artist emphasizes the vibrancy of the material and the harmony of color, offering a composition full of poetry and sensitivity.

Constantin Font’s works are now featured in several French public collections, notably at the Musée du quai Branly, the Beaux-Arts de Paris, and the Musée des Jacobins in Auch. His works appear regularly on the art market and attract consistent interest from collectors of 20th-century French painting.
