Frans Mortelmans (1865–1936) was a Belgian painter who was born and died in Antwerp. Trained at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts, he began specializing in the 1890s in still lifes and, above all, floral compositions, which brought him significant recognition. His work combines realistic depiction with a free and luminous touch.
In “Bouquet of Violets,” Mortelmans depicts violets arranged in a basket, with a few flowers placed in the foreground. The shades of purple and green stand out against a dark background, while the highlights on the leaves and flowers add depth to the composition.
