Bouquet of Flowers, oil on cardboard

A charming and delicate floral composition by Victor Charreton, a French painter known for his luminous landscapes of Auvergne and his coloristic explorations reminiscent of late Impressionism.

Born in Bourg-en-Bresse in 1864, Victor Charreton abandoned a career in law to devote himself entirely to painting. He became one of the leading painters of the Massif Central landscapes, exhibiting regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français and later at the Salon d’Automne. His work is now featured in numerous French public collections and museums, and remains particularly sought after by collectors of Post-Impressionist painting.

This charming still life reveals a more intimate side of his work. On a table covered with a light-colored cloth, the artist has arranged a generous bouquet in shades of pink, mauve, violet, and carmine, rendered with a free and vibrant brushstroke. In the background are several decorative objects, including an antique ceramic piece and a small polychrome box, creating a subdued and refined atmosphere.

The composition captivates with its rich palette, the subtlety of its color harmonies, and the soft light that brings each petal to life. The paint, applied with spontaneity and sensitivity, lends the work its freshness and elegance.

A rare composition in the body of work by Victor Charreton, who is better known for his landscapes, and which demonstrates his remarkable talent as a colorist.
