Large Gallé Vase, “purple Hazel”
Artist: émile Gallé (1846-1904)
Large vase (47 cm) in an elephant-foot shape, made of acid-etched multilayer glass with a purple hazel cameo design. The branches, leaves, hazelnuts, and even the clusters of flowers known as “catkins” are depicted! Certain details, such as the veins of the foliage, were refined with a grinding wheel.
The hazel tree symbolizes wisdom as well as fertility, since its flowers are the first to emerge from winter, symbolizing renewal.
This 1900 Art Nouveau-style vase is in perfect condition. The Gallé signature is incorporated into the design.
