"According To Jean-baptiste Oudry, Laie And Her Piglets Attacked By Mastiffs"
After Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Sow and her piglets attacked by mastiffs. This oil on canvas is a reworking, executed in the 18th century, perhaps by the painter's workshop, but on a smaller scale, of the painting by Jean-Baptiste Oudry held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen. The savagery and cruelty of the scene depicted recall the importance of hunting under the Ancien Régime. Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686–1755), an animal painter during the reign of Louis XV — he would later become the "official painter of the royal hunt" — specialized in this type of scene. Influenced by Snyders, he strove to convey his keen sense of nature and the accuracy of movement, both in his landscapes and in his numerous hunts and animal fights, even occasionally painting portraits of hounds from the royal packs. The painting is in very good condition, housed in a beautiful 19th-century giltwood frame with a key. Canvas only : 60 cm x 40.5 cm ; with frame : 79.5 cm x 61 cm
