Portrait Of Jean-yves Haberer In Front Of His Selincourt Estate By The Painter Mac-avoy
Artist: édouard Georges Mac-avoy (1905 - 1991)
Large portrait of Jean-Yves Haberer, Inspecteur des finances, Directeur de cabinets de plusieurs ministres, Directeur du Trésor, banquier, etc. painted, seated at his desk in front of his Selincourt property in Picardy, by French painter Édouard Georges Mac-Avoy (1905 - 1991).
Mac-Avoy, who sold his first canvas to the French State at the age of 19, divided his work between landscapes, still lifes and portraits, quickly favoring the latter genre to the detriment of the first two. The Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris holds his Portrait de Louise Hervieu.
He became the portraitist of numerous political, religious and literary figures, including General de Gaulle, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Pope John XXIII, André Gide, François Mauriac, Eugène Ionesco, Jean Cocteau, Marc Chagall, Helena Rubinstein, Maurice Béjart, SalvadorDali, Pablo Picasso and Johnny Hallyday.
In this painting, Mac-Avoy plays on a change of scale: from the green carpet of the work desk in the foreground, to the grassy carpet, thanks to perspective, located at the front of the Château de Selincourt.
His subject is treated with strength and expressiveness, particularly in the depiction of the hands, using impasto in both brush and knife, combining organic forms with geometric shapes and going as far as purity with the representation of the château worthy of an architect's elevation, all in shades of green, blue and pink ochre.
Masterly work, if ever there was one, by a great 20th-century portrait painter signed, lower left: "Mac'Avoy 72".
Good overall condition. Two paint chips.
Dimension with frame: Height: 152 cm, width: 146 cm. Canvas dimension: height: 132 cm, width: 129 cm.
