Black Chalk And Watercolor Drawing After An Engraving By Boilly
Artist: Louis-léopold Boilly
A black chalk and watercolor drawing based on an 1837 engraving by Boilly entitled "You will be happy in your marriage..." (see last picture).
It depicts a genre scene showing a young working-class woman in an interior, surrounded by a large audience including children, having her cards read by a fortune teller—an old woman in a headscarf, with a wart at the base of her nose, seated in a Louis XVI armchair.
This drawing, dated 1894 and signed Emily [?], recaptures, through the black chalk technique, the softness of Boilly's lithograph, while adding delicate pastel hues through the watercolor.
It is presented in a beautiful antique mahogany frame with a lilac mat that perfectly complements the colors of the drawing and the mahogany.
Late 19th century.
Very good condition.
Dimensions:
- 22 cm x 18 cm (sight size)
- 37.6 cm x 33.7 cm (image size).
