Small Flat Desk In Mahogany And Mahogany And Lemonwood Veneer From The Directoire Period
An elegant small flat desk in mahogany and mahogany and lemonwood veneer from the Directoire period. It opens with a drawer in the front. The top is covered in gilt green leather tooled in small pieces and rests on four tapered legs, flared at the base, ringed with bronze and ending in casters. Above each leg, the apron is decorated with a brass lozenge (a typical Directoire motif) within a rectangle, probably in amaranth wood, outlined with a brass fillet. Similarly, each recessed side, as well as the front of the drawer, is veneered in lemonwood, highlighted with a brass molding and an ebony fillet. Finally, the bottom of the apron is accentuated by a band of lighter wood, probably also lemonwood. A quality Parisian piece from the late 18th century. A charming little piece of furniture, easy to place.
