Marked C. Jy. M. For Claude Javoy, Large Solid Mahogany Armchair In The Louis XVI Style
Artist: Claude Javoy, Reçu Maître En 1779.
A large, elegant, and comfortable cabriolet-style bergère made of solid mahogany, molded and carved, with a medallion-shaped backrest, resting on four tapered, fluted, and rudenté legs, stamped “C. JY. M.” for Claude Javoy under the front crossbar. Upholstered in deep blue mohair velvet.
Claude Javoy was admitted as a master craftsman in Paris in 1779. Some of his sofas, armchairs, and chairs bear a second mark, often corresponding to the cabinetmakers Adrien-Pierre Dupain, Pierre Forget, François-Claude Menant, Paul-François Jean, Jean Bellet, Nicolas-Louis Mariette, Louis-Charles Carpentier, Jacques Audry, or Pierre-Eloi Langlois. All these cabinetmakers are known for having produced high-quality work in Paris during the reign of Louis XVI.
Claude Javoy left the capital in 1783 to settle in Nantes, where his Parisian training established his reputation and where he ended his career. It is worth noting that the mahogany used here is one of the woods characteristic of furniture production in port cities such as Bordeaux and Nantes.
Louis XVI period.
Very good condition, both the wood and the upholstery. All that’s left to do is bring this bergère home!
Normal signs of wear.
