"Pleasures of Love" is one of Jean-Antoine Watteau's most spectacular fêtes galantes (courtship party) —a genre that Watteau is credited with inventing. As the title suggests, the atmospheric painting depicts a group of men and women in a scene of joyous pleasure.
The bucolic, almost idealistic rural scenery forms the backdrop for what can only be described as a theatrical celebration of life and love. Looking closely at the work reveals a range of characters, each of whom is depicted in the midst of some sort of activity.
The present work is a beautifully executed 19th century oil on panel which remains faithful to Watteau's theatrical, characterful and atmospheric original, in the collection of the Dresden State Art Collection. Circa 1830, the present work is by a skilful hand who shows great sympathy to the composition, style, and structure of the master’s work.
Condition report: In good restored condition with fine areas of craquelure throughout most noticeable within a small area top right hand side. The paint surface is stable and the panel also straight and even. The colour tones are still excellent.
