" Putto Playing The Pan Flute, Manner Of Antonio Zucchi (1726-1796)"
Putto Playing the Pan Flute

XVIII-XIX Italian School in the manner of Antonio Zucchi (1726-1796)

Medium: Oil on canvas on panel

Period: Circa 1800

Provenance: From a private UK collection

Overall size with the frame is 75cm x 65cm x 5cm and the painting measured at 49cm x 39cm

A charming late 18th, early 19th century oil-on-canvas on panel depiction of a putto playing the pan flute. Painted in the manner of Antonio Zucchi (1726-1796), the putto represents a theme quite often depicted in both Italian and French Baroque romantic compositions.

The Italian neoclassical painter Antonio Pietro Francesco Zucchi was born in Venice in 1726. His first teacher was his uncle Carlo Zucchi, a painter of architecture and perspective views. He later studied historical painting with Francesco Fontebasso (1707-1752) and Jacopo Amigoni (1682-1752).

Antonio Zucchi met the Scottish architect and designer James Adam in Italy in 1760. Three years later, he was persuaded by Robert and James Adam to come to London and work for the architectural practice as a decorative painter.

Zucchi received many commissions while in England, often working as Adam's chief decorative painter.

The painting offered is typical of the late baroque artist’s decorative style and is painted with a soft texturing and subtle use of brushstrokes. The work is very decorative and would suit a wide range of interiors and decors.

Condition report: The original canvas has been laid to board in modern times (most likely circa 1980) and has been cleaned and retouched. There is evidence of old craquelure and possibly some mid-drift old repairs most likely undertaken when the painting was laid down onto panel. Overall in good condition and ready to hang on the wall. The 20th century (probably 1920’s) hardwood and gilt frame is particularly good quality and has been refurbished and repaired recently.
