An oil on canvas from the middle of the 18th century representing the judgment of Midas. Midas, famous king of Phrygia was the judge of the music competition between the satyr Marsyas and the god Apollo.
After declaring Marsyas the winner against the advice of the muses, Apollo wanted to punish him for his presumption by inflicting donkey ears on him, which the king ended up hiding under a Phrygian cap.
Our oil on canvas relates the moment when Midas, facing Apollo on a chariot of clouds, finds himself inflicted with the famous ears.
A servant according to legend will betray the king's secret after cutting his hair by wanting to shout it in a hole or in a well, the elements will then go and declaim it to the kingdom.
Of course Midas is also famous for having offered hospitality to Bacchus who will grant his wish to have the power to change everything he touches in gold, including his daughter.
Our oil has some missing parts and scrat frame.
A rare subject, a fresh, bright and colorful mythological painting.
