"the Reaping Loves" After Boucher, Large Oil-on-canvas Painting, The First Of A Pair
A large decorative composition painted in oil on canvas depicting a joyful gathering of putti engaged in harvest work.
In a rural landscape bathed in soft summer light, several cherubs move among the tall sheaves of wheat. On the right, a putto rests nonchalantly on an armful of wheat ears, while a winged companion teases him with a strand of straw. Above them, a young reaper holds a sickle and a sheaf of wheat. On the left, other childlike figures continue the harvest or rest in the shade of the trees.
The ripe ears of wheat, the sickle, and the work in the fields identify this scene as an allegory of Summer or the Harvest. The theme of lovers engaged in seasonal activities was particularly popular in 18th-century wood paneling, lintels, and ceremonial panels.
The lively and graceful composition is entirely in keeping with the Rococo style. The delicate skin tones, the drapery in shades of blue and orange, and the hazy landscape evoke the pastoral world developed by French painters in the circle and according to the taste of François Boucher.
The canvas, likely composed of several joined panels, retains a beautiful decorative effect. It exhibits a network of craquelure, some wear, scuffing, and small areas where paint is missing, particularly visible along the edges and in the lower sections, consistent with its age.
Re-stretched in the 19th century.
